Drawing on paper

To create my male nude drawings, I use a technique that consists in applying the graphite in more layers.

I find that the pencil is a very simple and straightforward medium. No colors that must dry, no odors, no containers spilling.

Generally I start working from photographs because for a model would be very difficult to sit still, it would also be too expensive for the time that I need to finish my work.

So I take a photograph of the person and start working on the photo that gives me the opportunity to study the shadows and lights. Of course this is only a starting point. Then I emphasize certain areas and eliminate completely others.

If I use a picture from a magazine, often transform the photo according to my tastes , my point of view.

For my nude male drawings I start with a sketch. To draw , I generally used the semi- rough Fabriano paper, which now seems almost impossible to find, sometimes I have also used the very rigid Schoeller paper that now is no longer available on the market.

I use different tones of pencils, from 4H to 9B, trying to reproduce the exact shape of the body.

When I draw I put a lot of attention to not to put my hand directly on the paper because the pressure and sweat can change the texture. To avoid this, I draw with a light pressure and put a sheet of paper under the hand.

For all kinds of texture I always use the same type of stroke, regular and fairly light.

Kinds of texture: rough, medium and fine.

The rough texture is easy to make, I can start with a layer of flat point 4B pencil and then put another layer of a fine point 2B pencil.

This type of texture is suitable for backgrounds.

The intermediate textures are expressed in many different ways, with many layers of different pencils, you can use a flat point 4B pencil and then a sharp 4H pencil.

The fine textures are mostly used to draw the skin. To create male nude drawings, female nudes or portraits begin with a very thin layer of 4H and then continue with sharp H , B, 2B , 3B pencils.

For the darkest parts you can use a 9B pencil.

To draw the male nude figure, muscles of the body require special attention because the light plays with the forms . You have to check the tones carefully (as you can see from the photo).

Remember:

Soft pencils have a dark mark, so softer the pencil, darker the mark. Fine-tipped pencils create fine textures. Flat-pointed pencils create rougher textures. A rough texture can be softened with a sharp pencil.

Do not stump the drawing with your fingers, the work would have a dirty appearance.

As you work, continually change the position of the paper.  You can see that the surface is uneven and you need to add another layer of graphite.

Keep the grain visible, the lack of grain can produce glossy areas. Work from light to dark and try not to delete. The eraser can change the texture of the paper.

At the end of the work you can use a fixative, although not all artists agree. Lately I use a spray fixative but it takes a lot of caution. A fixative on the paper can form irregular shadows and sometimes unpleasant stains.

To create male nude drawings is an enjoyable and challenging excercise, now it's up to you, have fun with pencils!
